What Is Spray Foam Insulation?

There are two main categories of spray foam insulation:

Open Cell Spray Foam

Open cell spray foam is a low-density foam with an R-value averaging about 3.5 per inch. It’s main appeal is its low weight – about half a pound per cubic foot. Because of its lower insulating value, it’s not recommended for areas that experience extreme cold.

Closed Cell Spray Foam

Closed cell spray foam is more dense than open cell, coming in at about 2 lbs per cubit foot, with an R-value of about 6.5 per inch (the highest among insulating materials). Because of its superior efficiency, it is more expensive to install than open cell spray foam.

Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation in North Dakota

There are several reasons why spray foam insulation has come to the forefront as the insulation of choice in recent years:

1) Superior Temperature Regulation

According to United Subcontractors, Inc., spray foam insulation protects against multiple sources of thermal movement (heating and cooling loss):

  • Conduction – The transfer of heat through materials in contact with insulation.
  • Convection – The movement of hot and cold air in your walls.
  • Radiation – The transfer of heat through your walls and roof.
  • Air Infiltration – The transfer of heat by air flow between the exterior and interior.
  • Moisture Accumulation – Moisture within the insulation that leads to heat loss/gain.
  • Air Intrusion – The movement of outside air into your home and then back out.

2) Excellent Moisture Barrier

When a building is improperly insulated, air leaks can create condensation or allow water to enter. That moisture is a problem, in and of itself, but can also breed other issues like mildew and toxic mold.

3) Cost-Efficient Insulation Option

While spray foam insulation may require a little more upfront investment, the return on that investment is seen almost immediately in the form of energy savings. On average, buildings with spray foam insulation see a savings of 30-50% in heating and cooling bills.
